Happy Australia Day!

Happy Australia Day to all of my Aussie friends in Australia and abroad!

To celebrate Australia Day, I wanted to share some of my favourite snack foods from Australia:

1. Vegemite

Synonymous with Australia, most people would recognise Vegemite as one of our most iconic foods. Made primarily from yeast extract, it’s a thick, dark spread that people usually put on their toast, crumpets and crackers. Due to its strong unique flavour, people either hate it or love it but I personally love it and there’s always a small jar in my pantry! The trick to enjoying Vegemite is moderation and I think it’s best served on freshly buttered toast, mmm!

2. Cheezels

Cheezels are a fun trip down memory lane as  I remember my mum packing small packets of Cheezels in my lunchbox for school. These are corn-based, cheese-flavoured rings of goodness! The best way to eat them is to put one on each finger and thumb, and pluck them off with your mouth!

3. Shapes

In addition to Cheezels, I also remember eating lots of Shapes as a kid! Shapes are savoury, almost puzzle like shaped biscuits that come in a wide range of flavours such as barbecue, pizza, cheese and bacon, and roast chicken. Each biscuit is packed full of flavour and I love the crunch as I chomp into them! In recent years, a new ‘light and crispy range’ was released making the biscuits even thinner and crunchier! Nowadays, my favourite flavour is sweet chilli and sour cream shapes from the light and crispy range!

4. Tim Tam’s

After Vegemite, I would say that Tim Tam’s are another one of our most iconic foods. Tim Tam’s are smooth, cream-filled biscuits coated in chocolate. They are so delicious and although I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, I’ll never turn one of these bad boys down! They come in a wide range of flavours such as original milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate and my favourite, chewy caramel. They also release limited edition flavours from time to time, and I’m dying to try the coconut cream!

So there you go! These are just a few unique snack foods from Australia that I’m enjoying today!

Have you tried any of these and if so, do you have a favourite?

Short Guide to Chinese New Year

This weekend marks the start of a new Chinese lunar calendar. As we bring in the Year of the Rooster, I wanted to share what Chinese New Year is all about and how my family and I will be celebrating this year.

When is Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year corresponds to the Chinese lunar calendar, so the date will vary each year. The festivities last for 15 days, from the new moon to the full moon. This year, Chinese New Year starts on Saturday 28 January. The most important dates are Chinese New Year’s Eve where families typically get together to celebrate and Chinese New Year’s Day, where families will begin visiting close family and friends.

How to Prepare for Chinese New Year

Before Chinese New Year, people usually clean their houses from top to bottom, to get rid of all the bad luck from the previous year. If any sweeping is done during the first few days after the New Year, it’s said that this will sweep away all the new luck, so be sure to get all of your spring cleaning done beforehand! Other preparations include decorating the house with messages and symbols of New Year cheer and good luck, and preparing food for the festivities.

What to Wear

During Chinese New Year, people will typically wear bright red clothes as it’s believed that the colour wards off bad fortune and evil spirits. Some people may also purchase and wear new clothes to symbolise a new beginning for the New Year. For men, this typically means a red shirt and for women, this typically means a red dress. My husband and I prefer not to buy new clothes every year, so we have red clothes on hand for special occasions such as Chinese New Year.

What to Say

There are various greetings and sayings that you may hear during Chinese New Year. However, the most common one is wishing someone “happiness and prosperity” or “gōngxǐ fācái”. For close family and friends, you can be a bit more cheeky and ask for a red envelope filled with money, by saying “gōngxǐ fācái, hóngbāo ná lái!”.

What are Chinese Red Envelopes?

Also known as red packets, or “hóngbāo’s” these are typically given to kids or unmarried adults from their parents, grandparents, family members and close family friends. The red packets symbolise happiness, good luck and blessings, and inside each packet you’ll find money. Traditionally, people should only receive red packets while their unmarried. So when they do get married, it’s time to give rather than receive! Parents will typically keep on giving red packets to their married children however, as a symbol of their love and blessings.

What to Look Forward Too

There are so many things to look forward to during Chinese New Year but my top 3 would be:

  1. Catching up with family. Here in Australia, my family isn’t too traditional so all of us including my extended family will catch up on the weekend closest to Chinese New Year’s Day over a delicious feast.
  2. Indulging in Chinese New Year treats. There are special foods and treats that are made especially for the Chinese New Year festivities. Every year, I look forward to having pineapple tarts and bak kwa, which are salty-sweet dried squares of pork, similar to jerky.  I also love the “Prosperity Salad” or “Lo-Hei Yusheng”, which is a delicious raw fish salad that is tossed with chopsticks by everyone at the start of the family catchup feast. The higher, the better!
  3. Giving red packets. Although I have to admit receiving is a lot more fun than giving red packets, it’s a privilege to give red packets to younger family members as a married couple. They say the more you give, the more you’ll receive happiness and prosperity in return, so it’s important to be generous!

Wishing everyone a happy Chinese New Year – may the Year of the Rooster bring you much happiness, prosperity and luck!

Popsugar’s 2017 Reading Challenge

This year I’ll be taking Popsugar’s Reading Challenge! For this year’s challenge there are 40 diverse book prompts on the list, with an additional 12 advanced prompts if I manage to finish the challenge before the year is up. Some of the prompts look hard but I’m looking forward to discovering some great reads that I wouldn’t have otherwise picked up!

My goal is to start with unread books on my bookshelves and then hit the library up for the rest of the challenge. Potential books that I have in mind are: Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, The Printmaker’s Daughter by Katherine Govier, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Geomancer by Ian Irvine and IT by Stephen King.

There’s also an awesome Goodreads Discussion Group for this challenge, if you’re curious to see what other people will be reading for each book prompt. It’s also a great way to connect with others doing the same thing!

Are you doing a reading challenge this year? If so, I would love to hear more about it!

Keeping Organised in 2017

At work I use Outlook to help keep me organised but in my personal life, I much prefer to use a physical planner. I’ve used various planners over the years as I love experimenting with different designs and layouts, but this year I’ve gone back to using a Muji Diary.

I first used a A5 Muji Paper Diary a few years ago and fell in love with the size, weekly layout and if I’m being frank, the grid paper. I have an unhealthy obsession with grid paper and the extra space was perfect for listing any projects, ideas, lists or overflow from the week. Since there aren’t any Muji stores in Perth, I went searching for the same planner while I was in Singapore a few months ago, but was only able to find the White Vinyl Diary in stock. I wavered because I’d had my heart set on the simple brown paper look but I’m glad I ended up buying it as I’ve quickly grown to love the clean, silver look of the planner.

Inside the Planner

The inside of the planner is as I remembered and starts off with a yearly overview from 2016 to 2018. The next section are monthly overviews that spread across both pages and I’ve been using these to map out potential blog posts and highlight any birthdays, public holidays or important dates. The next section and majority of the planner are weekly overviews from Monday to Sunday on the left-hand side and my beloved grid paper on the right-hand side. At the end of the diary is extra grid paper that I’ve started using to track things that aren’t specific to a particular week. The outside of the planner has a plastic cover that protects the diary. It’s a snug fit, which I like and the inside of the front cover has an extra flap for inserts and the back has a smaller flap for small cards.

Using my Planner

Nowadays I much prefer functionality rather than trying to make things look pretty, so I don’t really do much other than list what I need to do and cross things out once their done. I’ve watched plenty of “plan with me” videos and I love to see other people’s creative process with their planners but its just not for me. Beyond using watercolour for my monthly overviews, I’ll probably stick to using highlighters to colour code tasks in my weekly overviews because it’s quick and easy.

So that’s my diary situation for 2017! Do you like to use a diary to plan and if so, what are you using this year?

Monthly Beauty Picks: January

Last year, I embarked on a No New Makeup Challenge and I’m proud to say that I managed to finish the year without buying any new makeup! It was a lot easier than I thought it would be and I had a lot of fun using up my stash. This year, I won’t be doing a total ban but I’m still inspired to use up my existing makeup and beauty products. While getting support from others online doing similar challenges last year, I stumbled across Project Pan.

For those of you who don’t know what Project Pan is, it’s when you focus on using up a certain number of products or hit ‘pan’ on your products like eyeshadows or blushes. I don’t know about you, but I’m addicted to blushes and I have way more than I could use in a lifetime! Some people like to hit pan on a minimum number of products before buying new products, or use up a product completely before replacing it with something similar. Like all personal challenges, you can put your own personal spin on it and so this year, I’ll be doing a monthly ‘Project Pan’ of sorts.

One of the downfalls of those doing Project Pan is the boredom of using the same number of products everyday and many people seem to give up long before they hit pan. Look I get it, variety is the spice of life and it can take forever to hit pan on that itty bitty eyeshadow! So keeping this in mind, I’ll be picking a selection of makeup and beauty products at the start of each month and the challenge will be to use these consistently for a month. I know this will take me longer to hit pan on my products but it means that I get to rotate my products and get a bit of variety as well.

My January Beauty Picks

  • Masks: Mario Badescu Super Collagen Mask, Etude House Snail & From Nature Multi Effect Collagen Honey Mask
  • Hand cream: Nature Republic in Peach
  • Face spray: Urban Decay Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep Spray
  • Primer: Bare Minerals Prime Time in Medium
  • Foundation: Loreal True Match in Golden Natural
  • Concealer: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind
  • Powder: Bare Minerals Mineral Veil
  • Blush: Benefit Bene Tint
  • Eyeshadow primer: Urban Decay Anti-aging Eyeshadow Primer Potion
  • Eyeshadows: MUG Peach Smoothie, MUG Shimma Shimma & Em Cosmetics Vulnerable
  • Eyeliner: Daiso Eye Liner Pencil in Dark Brown
  • Mascara: Too Faced Better than Sex
  • Tinted lipstick: Benefit Bene Balm
  • Perfume: Benefit Laugh with Me

I’ve popped most of these products in a smaller makeup bag, so their all in the same, easy to grab place. I might use other products during the month, depending on the occasion or if I want to dress things up a bit more but the aim will be to stick to using these products throughout the month. If you’re playing along, do please let me know! I would love to hear what your January beauty picks are!

My Word for 2017

Last year I was inspired by Ali Edwards’ One Little Word project to choose the word Simplify to shape my year. It was a great word for me and brought me back to the basics as I decluttered physically and digitally, made do with the things I had, prioritised what was important to me and did more creative things. But as important as Simplify was to me last year, I knew I wanted to take a different direction this year.

So this year, my word for 2017 is Create.

While I’ve always had creative goals and projects, I’ve never put them first and they are often pushed to the side as other priorities take precedence. This year, I wanted to put it first and explore my creative self. With Create in the back of my mind, here are my 2017 goals.

My 2017 Goals

I want to put my creativity first. This will be a tough goal for me as I balance this between work and study commitments, however I’m determined to put my creative goals first. This means re-framing my creative work as being just as important as work and study, and setting aside time to make it happen.

I want to explore and challenge my creative self. I’ve always known that I loved creating things and playing with paper and stationery but I don’t feel like I’ve found ‘my thing’ yet. I’m not sure if I ever will but I’m taking this year as an opportunity to explore my creative self. I want to try new things, perhaps take a class or 2, and continue scrapbooking, lettering and knitting. Who knows, I might actually learn how to use my sewing machine!

I want to focus on my blog. Last year the blog started out great but it fizzled out in the second half of the year. This year, I want to focus on my blog and I intend to post every Tuesday and Thursday. The content is obviously important, however my main aim this year for the blog will be posting regularly and consistently. I’m using the monthly part of my 2017 Muji planner to map out a rough editorial calendar and I’m hoping that having a physical calendar to look at will keep me on track.

I want to collaborate with other people. Last year, I spent a lot of time building my Instagram presence and I think that it’s such a great platform for bringing people all over the world together. I’ve been fortunate to get to know some of these amazing people better and I would love to do some collaborations on Instagram and on my blog.

I want to learn basic photo editing skills. I’ll admit, I suck at editing my photos! While I love the writing aspect of my blog, I don’t have much patience for taking and editing photos because I just don’t really know what I’m doing. At times it can be a slow and frustrating process and it’s one of the reasons that’s been preventing me from posting more often. The only way I can get around this is by learning some basic photo editing skills to make the process a bit easier. Out of all of my goals, this is the one that I’m least looking forward to but will probably have the most impact for me.

That’s it! Do you have a word for 2017 and what are your goals?

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Years celebrations with family and friends. My Christmas was spent with family – catching up, laughing and eating way too much! In contrast, New Years Eve was a relatively quiet affair and my husband and I had a low-key albeit fun night in.

The past year flew by so quickly but I’m glad to be welcoming in 2017. There’s something so magical about the start of the year that seems to give people renewed energy, optimism and opportunities to start afresh, form goals and try new things. I’m not sure what 2017 will bring yet but I look forward to the adventure!

Wishing everyone a brightly-filled year ahead!
